About the project

The Forum Am Seebogen emerged as the winning project of an integrated concept competition, serving as a significant milestone in the evolution of modern urban development. It functions as a contemporary prototype for system construction, specifically designed to explore and push the boundaries of wood modular techniques. The project demonstrates that high-quality living spaces can be realized within remarkably short construction timelines without sacrificing architectural diversity or interior character.

A New Philosophy of Modular Living

While the project utilizes prefabrication, it deliberately moves away from the rigid uniformity often associated with modular builds. The design philosophy focuses on "breaking seriality," allowing for a wide variety of room solutions and apartment typologies. This flexibility ensures that the living spaces feel bespoke and adaptable rather than mass-produced, catering to the nuanced needs of modern residents.

The Forum: A Public Heart

The ground floor is defined by the "Forum," a space designed with a distinctly public character. Due to its strategic location and open conception, it serves a function that extends far beyond the boundaries of the building itself. It acts as a communal anchor for the surrounding neighborhood, inviting interaction and fostering a sense of shared urban life. This open-usage townhouse approach ensures the building remains porous and connected to the streetscape.

Integrated Living and Working

The project is built around a holistic "Living & Working" concept that blurs the traditional boundaries between professional and private life. This is realized through the inclusion of specialized "Mini-Labs"—flexible spaces that can be switched or adapted to various needs—and combined residential-professional units. The experience is rounded out on the top floor, where generous office spaces provide a professional environment with elevated views, completing the building’s ecosystem of productivity and rest.

A Hub for Social Innovation

As a key site for urban research and social innovation, the building has served as a focal point for international architectural discourse. It functions not just as a residence, but as an active laboratory for how we might live in the future. The atmosphere is one of experimentation and openness, characterized by its role as an outdoor base for urban development exhibitions and a venue for dialogues on the future of Viennese housing. Residents live at the center of a project that is actively testing new ways to create sustainable, high-quality, and socially integrated urban environments.
